This is a quick news roundup across some of the areas that I cover; media (traditional and digital), social media including influencers and events.  I hope it is a useful summary and will save readers time in scanning the plethora of news that is out there.  The aim is to keep it helpful, brief and informative rather than creating a literary masterpiece.

Campaign of the Month

This is my favourite PR campaign for October (so far), well done to the Roald Dhal team. The statue unveiling marks the 30th anniversary of Matilda and provides endless opportunities to update and be more or less controversial.  The statue, based in Great Missenden (temporarily), will also drive footfall to the museum based in the town.

Media News – Top Tips Working With Radio

The aim here is to give a fuller insight into a specific media or medium.  I thought I would kick off with radio as I recently attended a session with radio veteran Pippa Sawyer from Wycombe Sound.  Here are Pippa’s top tips in working with radio with some extra additions of my own.

Pre interview:

  • Research radio station formats (what’s right for you, a particular show or targetting a news story).
  • Know your story or objective (are you looking to promote events attract volunteers or create general awareness).
  • Promote your radio slot ahead of your visit and tag the station (the station will retweet immediately helping with awareness).

On day:

  • Arrive in plenty of time.
  • Tell the presented the main points you want to get across (it’s always good to have three key messages).
  • Relax and enjoy your visit (imagine you are talking to a good friend).

Follow up:

  • Share your interview on social media and include a link to the Listen Again function.
  • Ask the station for a copy of the audio and post it on your website.
  • Keep station posted on the outcomes, did you achieve your objective (this helps build a relationship and station can use this as award entries).

Social Media

A quick fire update of my top three latest developments from social media platforms:

  • Facebook is now testing a dating app, expected to be rolled out globally.  All aboard for the first Facebook wedding….bound to be live streamed!
  • Twitter has just released its October calendar which is really helpful in planning content around key events.  Twitter’s whole year calendar is also available.
  • You can now send GIFs in Instagram direct messaging…..oh happy day 😉

This is the current hot area of social so I have created a section to highlight success/ failures and the latest thinking.

The head of Influence at a major PR agency this week said that he had seen no evidence that Influencers are effective in selling products.  Although its the marketing buzz area of the moment, it seems there is a lack of evidence that investing in Influencers will lead to a direct sales uplift.  The main benefits in working with Influencers are believed to be more around long-term awareness raising.

Here’s the full story if you would like to read it.
